42-HP_HomePainting-ChoosingRightColourWith the warmer months now approaching home occupants can turn their thoughts towards the home improvement projects that they’ve been contemplating over the winter.

One of the easiest and most effective home improvements that can be undertaken is the addition of a fresh coat of paint, which can be applied in a day or over a weekend, and which will produce an immediate change of appearance.

But what colours should you choose if you’re considering painting your home and what effect will this choice have on the feel of your home?

The first step in selecting a paint colour palette is to gain an understanding of the colours themselves and the various effects and feelings they can evoke.

It is a basic fundamental that light colour tones will make rooms feel and seem lighter in appearance, whereas darker colours will have the effect of dropping the lighting in a room, and this should be kept in mind when you are considering a colour for your area and/or room.

Additionally, those who are looking for subtlety can achieve this by keeping the variants of their chosen colour close together i.e. blue and light blue, whereas those seeking bold or strong contrasts can achieve this by choosing opposing colours, such as black and white.

Knowing exactly what it is that you wish to achieve with your painting can go a long way in helping you to achieve overall success.

If you wish to give your room the appearance of being larger in size, you should choose a colour for your wall trims that is lighter than your main wall colour.

Conversely, if you wish to make a room appear to be smaller than it really is, you can paint just one wall of that room in a darker colour which can produce a shrinking effect.

Additionally, you can also use these same techniques to increase or decrease the perceived height of your internal ceilings, with a lighter colour helping to send the ceiling upwards, and a darker colour producing the effect of bringing the ceiling height down.

Please note: painting a room or house is something that you should not be rushed, and as such it is advisable that you pre-test and carefully examine any colours that you are considering using before their application.
